Heads up

What’s changing for 2027

  • Idaho
Nonresident general deer and elk tags are now a drawing (Dec 5–15), not a first-come December sale. The old advice to be online at midnight on Dec 1 no longer applies.
  • Wyoming
Nonresident preference points rise to $75 for elk, deer and antelope on January 1, 2027.
  • Colorado
The big draw overhaul (a 50/50 preference-and-bonus split) doesn’t start until the 2028 draws. 2027 works the same as 2026.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between “Expected” and “Confirmed”?

Confirmed means the state has published its official 2027 date. Expected means the state hasn’t announced it yet, so we’ve listed when it fell last year. Most states keep similar dates year to year, but always check the official site before you apply.

What’s the difference between preference points and bonus points?

With preference points, tags go to applicants with the most points first. With bonus points, every point gives you extra chances in a random drawing, so more points improve your odds without guaranteeing a tag. Some states use one system, some use the other, and some mix both. New Mexico uses no points at all.

What happens if I miss a deadline?

For most draws you’ll have to wait until next year. Some states offer a second-chance or leftover draw later in the season; check the Second-chance draws tab above.

Can I build points without applying for a tag?

Yes, in many states. Some let you apply for a point only during the main draw, and others, like Montana and Wyoming, also have separate point-only periods later in the year. See the Point-only periods tab.

Do I need a hunting license to apply?

It depends on the state. Many require you to buy a hunting or qualifying license, or pay a nonrefundable application fee, when you apply. Check each state’s official site for current requirements and fees.

Can Hunt the West apply for me?

Yes. Elite and Heritage members get application services in every Western state, built around a custom plan. We track every deadline so you don’t have to.
